I've been in your place a few times, very glad that I have enough feed this year. I agree that it sounds like you're running pretty high on corn: I would only feed that much to milking cows. It's possible, I think, that you may be running them a little hot, and would actually save forage by cutting back on grain. Do you have access to corn stalks? They'll do a lot to stretch feed if you can get them cheap, just roll them out so the cows have a nice dry place to lay, and they'll pick through and find a little to eat. It always seems to me that making the cows go hungry just makes them eat faster when they do get feed. It's not just a matter of meeting their nutritional needs, you've also got to convince them that they're not hungry. They also eat less as the weather gets warmer: just looking over the fence at green grass fills them up a little.
