Subject: RE: Heterosis?

Central Alberta
Heterosis is the opposite of inbreeding depression. When bad alleles pair up, the result is some sort of genetic defect. That's why there are so many defects in inbred populations.
When two different breeds are crossed, the chances of two bad alleles pairing up are less likely, so it's called "hybrid vigor" or heterosis.
Very few people nowadays who understand genetics think that pure breeds are better than hybrids. That's why cross-breeding is so prevalent.
