| Federal government paid the pharmaceutical co’s billions of $’s to develop the vaccines under Project Warp Speed. The government then contracted with the company’s to buy millions of doses from them.
According to the link below Pfizer is charging the government $19.50 per dose, but they expect to double or triple that price in the future.

So the answer is that it is not free, the taxpayers of the US are footing the bill currently.
