Southeast Virginia
I am using a Garmin I got 7 years ago. Still working great and I drive over 50k miles a year so that's a lot of hours of use. I got an adapter to hook mine on the passenger visor. Never had to use the footage but have too many close calls of people pulling out in front of me to not want to have it in my vehicle.

Wish it had a rear facing camera. Last month I was stopped at a light on a highway that was in a 55mph zone. Heard a big crash behind me and saw in my rear view a pickup rolling over cars behind me. I was the last car in line to drive off unscathed. That truck that didn't slow down took out both lanes of traffic on that side of the divided highway. No serious injuries but listening to the radio the road was blocked for 2 hours.

I would definitely stick to a name brand and put in a high quality card or you might have trouble continuous looping. I thought my cam was going bad when it locked up. Turned out it didn't like the card.
