We were considering building a house on the farm for part of our family. It would have been pushing $200/sq. ft. But nixed that plan since you can buy an existing house in town for well under $100/sq. ft.
Sounds like a smart move.
I would call what you decided to do a hedge against building a new house. Way things sound that spread will narrow a bunch over the next several years.
