Subject: RE: Cover Crop and Crop Residue Management

southern MN
Being as I’m farming the backwaters bottom of a glacial lake sealed with 120 feet of yellow and blue clays below the topsoil, water tends to flow sideways to the bottom of my fields.

It’s just so hard to get rid of the water once it’s here. Can bleed it off with tile and it can evaporate upwards. That’s about it.

When it dries out, the water still flows slowly under ground to my low spots and they keep growing a deep rooted crop.

The hill tops and minor sand veins that formed in the lake basin of course dry out as they feed the heavy soil.

So I rarely get a great crop, but then I don’t get a crop failure either.

It’s easy being average here.

Always appreciate your comments on these threads, you give a lot to think about. It’s tough to give specific answers and then someone like me comes along with a different starting point, of course your answer will be completely different. I know it’s hard for you and others to always deal with that back and forth.......
