I'll jump in as I have a similar train of thought as Coup on ag and the free market.

Free markets work within countries where The Rule of Law applies. The United States (for now) has the rule of law as defined by the Constitution and laws passed by Congress.

China...Rule of Men...not Rule of Law. The law for them is whatever Pooh Bear says it is today...could change tomorrow and it could be retroactive. So when we (a country with Rule of Law) allow a country with Rule of Men to purchase critical assets (very large, if not the largest vertically integrated hog producer) and export facilities, we now have to function in the international realm. Our rules may or may not apply on any given day.

Look around the world...not everyone plays by our rulebook, or any rulebook for that matter. So on an international platform, China may get away with whatever it wants to do to some degree, whereas critical assets owned by US based corporations have to play by our rules. Maybe nuance, but China is very good at operation in very gray area.
