I doubt if there are very many families that can write a $2800 check and not wreck the checking account. Think about the average wage and what the net take home dollars would be every month. Then substract stuff like utilities, health care, clothing, food, etc.
Most farmers are rich beyond their eyeballs of young single mothers trying to make it on their own out there.
Financing carpet is not unheard of, if you bought a house for your kid that you could afford, and its fricken nasty as hell because that's what you could afford. I can see financing carpet.
