we have a 6k watt portable gen. our house furnace plugs into the wall instead of being hard wired, so we simply plug it into the gen. Keep the Gen on the front porch, chained to a porch post to keep from being stolen. run a cord through the window, use a towl rolled up to seal the crack where the cord comes through

Have to do some math adding up amps and rotating around plugging in fridges and freezers not to overload things. even ran a tv and vid game console for awhile when the kids got restless. Didnt run the gen at night. would build up heat in the house around bedtime then shut it off and fire it back up in the morning

hot water heater is on LP

Key to these small generators is having fresh gas. If you let the gas sit in it 3 months it probably wont start. we drain the gas completely out, including the carb. If we think a storms coming that might affect power well fill up some cans. I know a local truck stop has its own backup gen, so can always get gas there if widespread outage.
