Yes, the electric company should have a panel with a line disconnect you can plug your generator right into.  You have to throw the switch to get the power from the generator to the house.  Go that route so you don't back feed the line and electrocute somebody working on the line.  After having to use generator a few times I had one installed.  Now I have a Miller Bobcat welder/generator.  Went that direction so maybe I can use it enough to keep it running.  A stand alone generator sat so much that every time I needed it I had to fix it.
