It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Need auxiliary power source. Don't forget: a solar storm can knock out a power grid just as easily as the event did last week. A backup generator would be the best option. It could even be a tornado that wipes out the main power lines or even take out a converter station. Not just cold weather.
