I could always just bore a small hole to the basement from my garage and would be only 10 feet from my panel. 




I would not disconnect the incoming lines. There are inexpensive lockouts available for exactly that, so you can use your portable.

DON'T leave the generator in the garage for (what should be) obvious reasons!!

Run the cord from outside the garage through that little hole and into your basement.

I've powered our house with a portable before we installed a 20kw standby. It worked, I was younger, but it was still work.
