Subject: RE: Gate wall thickness

scmn

I should have taken the picture from the other side, but what we did was welded a 1.5" schedule 40 pipe between the horizontal tubes on the main gate near the far end of the gate.  We then clamped a second set of hinges on to these vertical pipes and hung the second gate on them with the shaft between the sets of hinges.  You could weld the shaft onto the gate if you prefer, but in our case we used a piece of 1" sucker rod and felt the weld might crack.

On this gate setup, the added verticals are 22" from the swing end of the 12' main gate which allowed the 10' secondary gate to fold back on the main gate for a 12' gate or fold out for a 20' gate.  If you need to reach across a 12 and 17' opening you would use the 12' as the main gate and then hang an 8' gate 36" from the swing end so that it adds 5' when folded out.

Another poster suggested hanging another gate on another pole for covering the wider opening, which does not always work.  In our case, this gate folds out and reaches another gate from the opposite pole and it would not work to add a pole in between since it and the gate would be in the way the majority of the time.  We used the folded out gate when moving cattle between pens.  Prior to this we chained another a temporary gate in between when moving cattle, but found that gate often disappeared for other temporary projects and was a pain to setup by oneself.

Edit to add:
We use the chain from the swing end of the gate to secure the folded out gate in the open position.

If the area is heavy pressure it would be a good idea to add another chain top and bottom or install a heavier horizontal tub in the fold out gate as the 14ga tubing in the gate will bend when 10 1500# steers are pushing on the gate with 10' of leverage as we found out.
