Are you wanting to hang the gate and have it cover say a 12' door on one direction and swing 90 degrees and cover a 16' span the other direction? If so I don't think you'd really need much heavier stock than whatever you'd normally use for the pressure it sees as long as you give it some pretty good overlap, 3-4'. I do think you'd have to be pretty thoughtful on how you build it if you plan for it to telescope in and out very long without the outdoor, animal pressure and moisture locking it up.

I've been told that orienting a steel tube on the diagonal is better if you plan for it to slide. Points up and down instead of flats if you will, apparently they slide smoother that way. Also need to be careful what you use, the weld seam can get in the way of tube stock fitting inside another cleanly, someone else likely knows those details better.
