scmn

You will need to go thicker if you make the gate telescoping like that because when it bends it will no longer telescope.  I know of one dairy that removed a telescoping gate and replaced it with a folding gate after seeing ours.  The folding gate is a lot more forgiving and does not seize up if not used every day.  We have a couple places that we have a 2" 10' gate hung on a 2" 12' gate so the gate is 20' long when folded out and folds to 4"x12' while cleaning pens.  In our situation we only have 12' of wall space for the gate while cleaning.

Edit to add:
I will try to get pictures tonight of one of the folding gates.  If you insist on the telescoping gate I would use a 2x2x3/16 square for the outer section and 1-1/2x3/16 round for the inner section so the sections do not bend and have a lot of room to prevent seizing.  The downside is your gate will easily weigh 300-600# depending on length which will require a really stout support.
