Subject: RE: Maple sap running?

Bourbon,Indiana
Approximately one spile/ft diameter of tree. So 24" diameter tree gets 2, 48" tree gets 4, and so on.

ETA: on average expect about a quart of syrup net/ spile....or about 45 gallons of sap for each spile....depending on the year and how dark you let your sap get.

Also: hard maples will net you more and better quality sap than sucker (soft)maples. And you can gather over a longer season. Soft maple sap turns bitter quicker.
