Arva, Ontario | I spent some time on the other side of the counter in Ag Retail/Supply.
There are many prices because each customer “costs” more or less to service - time/equipment/hand-holding/poor organization/financial risk.
Ergo, it’s my cost of goods sold, plus my base margin, plus my Fudge Factor for the above reasons.
If you want one price list for all, it’s possible as long as you don’t mind being fired as a customer. I’m not working for nothing on the high cost people and using margin from good (not always large) customers to subsidize them.
I have 2 things I try to do with my vendors.
1. I try to be organized, let them know what i will need and when, do my best to respect their time, return any equipment in as good a shape or better than when it came, and pay promptly. In short, be a low cost customer.
2. Never disclose one vendor’s price to another. Once you’re known to “farm prices”, you’ll often get high-balled.
The price you pay is a function of many things. Discuss with your suppliers how you might be able to lower your cost as a customer.
