Wisconsin | In April around here after a cold winter with minimal snow, the surface will be mud, or start warming good once it dries. But it will be frozen at a foot deep, and colder yet at three feet. Doesn't matter that it's warm on the surface, and ten feet down it's well above freezing, if there's a layer that's well below freezing it will keep getting colder deeper while it's getting warmer on the top. Look at a chart of soil temperature from 4-20' deep, the warmest temp at some depths will be during the winter and vice versa due to the lag from the surface temperature. | |
