Want to be able to carry on a fluid conversation with someone. Reading or writing is not that important right now
Fluid conversation comes from understanding the mechanics of the language. It's much easier to read and write than to carry a fluid conversation with a native speaker.
The structure of a classroom was best for me. Learning a few words here and there is great but things like conjugations, stem changes, various tenses, masculine/feminine, etc are the key to fluidity. There's a lot of things that don't directly translate because the languages are built differently. There is no "ing" or possessive s in Spanish for example.
It helps to understand English before learning. I forgot everything about the structure of English, learned as much about English as I did Spanish somedays. |
