I picked up a couple small parcels recently, and am flying in the dark a bit.
All of it is old apple orchard that has been fallow for about 10 years since they tore the trees out. Mostly smooth brome and knapweed growing. The best ground is sandy loam, the worst is basically sand with a belt of loamy till at 48”.
I expect pH to be in the low 5’s, CEC very low. Soils are typically low in K, Ca, Mg. Won’t have a test in for at least 6 weeks.
There is a 10 ac parcel of the sandiest ground that I want to go into permanent pasture. I doubt I’m going to have the cash flow to get any lime or nutrient spread on it this year (low priority).
So my question is, I have some carry-over alfalfa and orchard grass from 2020. Does it make any sense to try and borrow the neighbors Great Plains drill and get some seed in?
Land is certified organic so I can’t do any herbs, but I plan on mowing it at least 2-3 times to control the knapweed flowers.
