Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | I have ran one for quite a few years. I have a neighbor that swears running a Shelbourne header is worth 5-15 bu more corn in that stubble. University of Nebraska did trials and also showed those results.
I hired another farmer to harvest some wheat a couple years ago that used both a Shelbourne and a regular head in the same field. Last fall harvesting corn after a fairly dry summer there were places I could tell the difference between the two heads. Not always but some. He was having to harvest low and he wasn’t spreading the chaff and straw very well behind the regular head. I think had he been able to cut higher and spread the trash better maybe it wouldn’t have been as noticeable?
I like using a Shelbourne from the harvesting standpoint. Harvest faster. Less wear on the combine. Less fuel use. |
