Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa | IlliniFarmr - 2/19/2021 10:43 I have an outside municipality that wants to take my farm through eminent domain. I've found out that eminent domain has a lot more teeth than it used to, but when it goes to court I'm confident I will win, just be poorer. They want to send surveyors out to survey my property which isn't for sale. Is there any way to legally keep them out? I have no issue with the surveyors, they are just doing their job, but it looks to me like in Illinois you have to just let them do what they want on your property even if it is against your best interest. I'd be curious if anyone else has had a situation like this and what they found out. I'm sorry I have to be vague about the situation.
I certainly understand the principle of the thing, and sentimentality, and not wanting the b******s to win. The instinct to fight and keep that which is rightfully mine is strong and righteous. But........is there any way you can look at it as an opportunity to remain whole and escape Illinois to somewhere that hasn't slid down the rabbit hole? I'd certainly be tempted, but if it was Grandpa's farm, etc. not sure I could do it either. |
