Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS

My folks were without power for 13 days during the ice storm of 1994.

"Back in the day" we had a neighbor who lived in a little shack about a mile up the road from us. I was born in 1959. His wife died sometime in the late 1970s (can't remember exact year). After the wife died the son moved back to the "home place" and built a modern house and had his dad move in with him. They finally tore down that little shack. It never had electricity. Heated and cooked with wood, used coal oil for lamp light, and got their water from our well in 10 gallon milk cans. The dad even farmed with a pair of mules well into the 1970s. It's not that they didn't have any money. The wife had a pretty decent inheritance. She was just too much of a tightwad to spend any of it. Would rather sit around and freeze to death than have a decent place to live. In 1970 they were living like it was 1770.
