Subject: RE: Death Loss in Dairy and Dairy Cross Steers

Hard to compare apples to apples. Lot of variables to consider... single source vs salebarn, 80# vs 100#, birth to finish or 300 to finish. I never send a group of culls off and buy more in the 80s than over 100#. I think there’s more money in the cattle I can improve purchased at a discount so I run in the 20-35% range. Have I raised groups under 5%, yes. I also paid a whole lot more up front as well. Usually by 300# death loss is maybe 2-3% thereafter from stupid things like hanging themselves in the feeder wagon.
