Subject: oil pan heaters

NW IOWA
I have a glue on type oil pan heater on my truck thats outside all year, I am in northen iowa climate and have pluged in with the block heater only when getting b elow 0 or more. I have done it with a timer so turns on couple hours before cranking it up, Lately it seems people say to plug it in with warm oil not cold oil. Dont know what is the correct way for sure. I read warming up cold oil burns the oil, My thinking is if i plugged in the pan heater 12 hours before starting truck wouldnt be good either. What say you?
