Subject: RE: 6 in v. 7.5 in wheat

sw Nebraska
I have raised my best irrigated wheat with an old Great Plains 6 inch drill until just recently and with newer wheats and better management usually was following pinto beans so not much residue. We quit using it in dryland conventional as it wasn't throwing enough ridge to protect the crowns and we had a lot of winter kill. I don't think it would do well with residue in no-till. We run a 7.5 inch drill no-till into soybean ground and chem fallow and conventional fallow even into current year's corn residue. I think it is a nice tradeoff. If you are able to get through the residue and have rtk you can put one 30 inch row between the 7.5 rows.
