Did I hear right that if you got the vaccine, you can still carry the virus from one to another?
One of the latest TWIV episodes looked at that question. It's still being studied, but it appears that at least some vaccinated people will have minimal viral shedding for a couple days.
Look at it this way. If you have no immunity and you get an infectious dose, then you get sick and are shedding a lot of virus for one to three weeks. If you're fully vaccinated and you get that same dose of virus, it still enters you and starts to replicate before the immune system contains it. So you don't even know you're sick, but you might be shedding a low level of virus for 2-3 days.
It doesn't appear to be sterilizing immunity, at least for some people. It's still a lot better than no immunity. |
