Is there some different math so this can be positive operation ?
Extremely low input and low cost operations do not need high yields to be profitable.
He's using very low populations (less than 24,000 seeds per hectare), cheap herbicides, low cost machinery, low land costs, etc, etc.
And he's in a positive corn basis area, meaning he can expect to get a higher price for his corn than the average part of the corn belt.
So when you combine the very low inputs with the higher price, he's profitable at 3 tons per hectare, or maybe less. And if he does get above average rain, he might get as much as 5 tons per hectare.
