Iowa | My wife let me keep some files on her laptop. I had to replace hers too, but at least it did not go down at the same time mine did. Now, I back up regularly on a couple memory sticks (one daily & one monthly), and my wife's laptop annually. Probably should make sure one of those is usually offsite. If my desktop goes down again, I'll just buy another one (& MS office) off the shelf and plug in my memory stick. It will probably happen again soon if my luck is the same as yours.
All of the vital stuff is on one file. I learned this by watching the accountant:)
