Hi BK (and anyone else interested in C/ecosystem service markets),

I encourage you to attend the event on Friday 2/12 described at the following link (and attached flier) and ask Qs.
https://ilsustainableag.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/CarbonMarketF...

I recently talked with someone associated with 1 of the 4 marketplaces that will be represented at this event.

I asked about accountability and learned that for this particular marketplace the general plan is as follows.

step 1: baseline testing for soil C
step 2: baseline C data and farmer practice info is entered into a computer model that predicts C sequestration
step 3: farmer receives payments for several years based on model prediction
step 4: enrolled fields are retested and additional payments are adjusted (upward or downward- potentially to 0) based on the results of this testing. Farmers are NOT required to pay back into the system if C has NOT accumulated as predicted. Model is adjusted for new contracts using new soil test results.
