southern MN
We can’t do winter barley here.

I grow a little oats, so the swather and combine get out for small grains anyhow.

A neighbor raises a couple heritage hogs for fun on 5 acres. He mentioned barley would change the color of the lard on his old breed hogs, keeps it whiter.

So I raise 5 acres of barley a year.

My cattle can eat the extra, and the straw is of use.

It’s kind of fun to add that to the Fsa forums, and so forth. From a distance folk just figure it’s wheat, I’m sure.

I’m still learning, actually Albert Lea Seeds had a couple hour presentation on small grains today, thry talked about barley in my area which was very interesting. It should be available online in a week or so.

I see I have been planting too low a population, and I shouldn’t be afraid to plant it early like oats.

Gotta have some fun in farming.

Paul
