I suppose this is all hindsight but I've always wondered, why didn't Holly, Richards, and Valens stay in a hotel in Clear Lake and fly to Fargo in the morning?   It was something like 1 in the morning when they left.   I would have thought common sense would dictate getting to bed and go in the light.
