Subject: Monitor Brackets made from Unistrut

I would like to share with all of you guys a slick way of building your own monitor brackets that are fully adjustable to your own liking. We recently purchased a John Deere R series tractor and needed to install several monitors. Our other tractors had brackets made from whatever steel we could find in our inventory, mostly heavier than it needed to be. While I was looking in the shop around for some steel to make new brackets, I came across some left over pieces of Unistrut that we used to mount an electrical box.

Perfect, so I went to Menards and came home with a 10’ piece Unistrut, a couple of bags of 3/8”Top Grip Nuts. These are the nuts that you can place anywhere on the Unistrut, push them in and give them a half twist. This seats them into the channel and can be slid to any location you prefer. Now just thread 1 ½” ram mounts into these nuts and your options are endless.

After this build, we decided to update the other tractors with this same system so I made a second trip to Menards and found everything needed to build these and never had to drill a hole, just a little cutting with the right angle grinder with a cut off wheel and some minor bending.

Supplies needed (all can be found within an arm’s length)

* 1-10’ stick of Unistrut $19.24

* 2- Strut 90 degree Angle brackets $2.46 x 2 $4.92

* 3-Strut 7” Flat 4 hole bracket $2.02 x 3 $6.06

* 2- bags of 3/8” Top Grip Nuts (5 per bag) $4.26 x 2 $8.52

Total bracket cost, under $40.00

We ended up changing our entire ram mounts to 1 ½” (C). I ordered these, along with the ram mount arms from Shoup, knowing we would get these the next day. The ram mounts were 3/8” internal thread, so we just used all thread rod, added glue to the threads and screwed it in as tight as we could with vice grips and cut it off to length, approximately ¾”.

With the monitors mounted, the brackets seem very solid but have not been able to give it the field test. This install was only in John Deere tractors so I am not sure how it would work in other brands, but with a little thought, I’m sure it could.
