W2's and W3 can be done and filed online with the government site. The individual W2's are printed out to give to employees. Why one government agency can do this and another cannot is beyond me. 1099's and 1096 must be filed with the original red printed form, and I don't think a color printer prints a acceptable form either. I have hand printed 1099's and the 1096 in the past.
