Mount Vernon, WA | I'm in charge of the maintenance of a diesel generator set for a commercial gas/mini-mart store. After first taking on the job, I discovered that it did a weekly exercise routine once a week for about 20 minutes under no load. The transfer panel had the option of switching to building power during the exercise, but the store owner wouldn't allow that because he wasn't interested in weekly power disruptions at the gas pumps as the transfer box made the switch.
I told the owner that it would be better to eliminate the unloaded exercises, and instead put it under full load about once every other month or so. I now go over and do a manual 30-minute exercise about every 60 days and put it under full load for about 15 of those minutes with a load bank. This is without a doubt far better for the engine than all of that unloaded run time. | |
