You are the only one. Im 34, been farming full time since 2013. These prices are great for me trying to build equity. My rent will go up significantly because its based on 1/3 of gross revenue, and I’m increasing non-gmo soybean acres. Fine by me.
Also gives me more income to invest in tile, which should help increase my income for years.
Interesting, I am nearly the same age as you, and I feel the opposite. I have seen way more opportunity when we are near breakeven, and people look to retire, or reduce acres to limit exposure.
When there is lots of profit, farmers don't want to retire, they choose to keep going and pack away huge equity, while in comparison, I can only build smaller amounts, therefore putting me further behind.
Farming when only half the farmers are showing a profit seems to work better here. That said, my goals are to keep adding in the plat book, everybody has different plans though.
My opinion will be completely reversed in 20 years. |
