Same opinion, you can pack on the pound when they are older, but the oats nowdays is almost like feeding free choice barley. Seen a 1500 lb fat 4H calf a few years back and all he got was brown oats. I have lost em on creep too, usually the biggest ones, more than I care to admit. Usually happens if I let the feeder run out, but I have lost them when I didn't. Better off to creep them when they are smaller then pull it out when they get 400 or so lbs. Even with the extra weight gain, if you loose 1, all your extra profit is gone. Nothing wrong with pail feeding, we feed a TMR to our replacements and still hand feed a few pails of rolled barley to our replacements each day . It really calms them down. I got no use for high strung animals.
