NW MN | It sure is a bummer being asked to come into a project to build solutions when 95-97% of it is already solidified. You are working around so many things that you give the best you can, but like you mention it has to come at a price that is acceptable to mfg.
In my role castings and forgings are handy to do for multiple functions, but the tooling doesn't come at the same low price as many weldment fixtures. It is also more costly to make design changes down the road. Volume pushes design as well.
The design change point could be the mfg has too much in inventory that fixing the crappy design might be 50% or more through its lifecycle by the switch-over. Test time to make the switch could also be costly depending on company's other product demands. | |
