I see the same design issues to you see and can not understand why, apart from the fact I have seen so many new engineers who have never touched the type of equipment they will be designing.

This is a legit problem. That, and foreign engineers who try to tell US farmers how we should be using our equipment. This isn't anything discriminatory against those engineers, but farming in Europe is different than farming here and needs different solutions.

I worked with a guy that was a brilliant engineer, but was insistent that US farmers needed to change to metric row spacings. Now, I'd love if the US converted to the metric system, but farmers have far too much invested in equipment spaced on say 30" rows to ever make converting to round metric spacings an economically feasible task. He refused to accept that for as long as I wished with him.
