I'd just have them crown it and be done.  I went a couple decades without going to the dentist.  Had one break apart when out of all things eating an onion ring.  I think I cracked it a year or so before as I bit on something hard.   I've got all my teeth fixed up and cleaned twice now since then.  I go back in a few weeks for another exam and cleaning.
