Subject: Tooth filling

Milford, IL
I broke a tooth a few months ago. I was chewing on some almonds I broke the edge off of a molar. Molar has an old amalgam filling.

My mom is an ace tooth mechanic at the local dentist, and I am fortunate enough to get my teeth cleaned and repaired at a discount. Dentist has repaired this molar twice since I broke it and is using a more modern type of filling, I don't know what its made of but it is white in color. First new filling lasted a week and the second failed about an hour later after a Reuben sandwich. I'm thinking of requesting an amalgam filling as the others I have seem very durable, but I see that some places are beginning to restict amalgam fillings based on mercury concerns. Would I be crazy to request an amalgam filling?
