NC Kansas | Our community has a couple nice things... They call one Santa's work shop and you can donate money or gifts or your time to the cause, then kids go through it with an "elf" helper and they can "shop" for their family. There is a huge amount of volunteer help and donations that go into this event. They had it set up so each gift cost .25 and the kids would go through and purchase a screw driver set for dad and a bottle of lotion for mom, are 2 examples. Then there was a wrapping/bagging station so the kids can take the wrapped presents home. The kids LOVE it and get so engaged in the "giving". It's not necessarily for the people in need, but it's a great little thing for them to participate in.
We also have angel trees where the less fortunate can anonymously put a Christmas list out for a 3 year old boy and 5 year old girl (for example) with a few thing on it they would like. Then a anonymous person can take that list buy the presents and it helps facilitate a Christmas for some that may not be able to have what others have.
