| It really depends on how contaminated the old pipe is, and what your climate is. If you live in a wet area, wire rot will be significantly accelerated on raw steel. Galvanization is essentially a sacrificial anode, and the coating on the wire will sacrifice itself to save the post it's tied to. In areas of the country where it is dry, this isn't much of an issue. They will even use class 1 galvanized wire and get by with it just fine. | |
