Subject: RE: Vertical twin mixer grinding hay?

NW Iowa
I used to deal with vertical mixers a lot from a design standpoint. They are NOT (I will repeat NOT) designed to replace a tub grinder. For guys that chew up a bale every day or 2, it's fine, but when you are talking multiple bales a day, hire it ground. I've watched a 650 cu ft twin screw go to town on 2 switch grass bales for 30-45 minutes. The guy had enough time to run off to another place and do some other chores before coming back to load the rest of the feed. Think about all of the time and fuel that is being wasted and wear and tear on the mixer and tractor. I know knives are not cheap. Screws are even more when comes time to replace those...spinning needlessly in hay.

I was part of designing a deal to be able to load a certain amount of feed into a box, hit a button and fire the mixer up (this is a truck mount), and let it run for a set amount of time. Real world numbers...saved 10% on fuel alone...no difference in mix coming out the chute. Put that $ towards a tub grinder...
