washington, iowa | I'm looking at 100 acres of corn that was planted the end of May (after chopping rye) and its still testing 22.7% moisture. Have tried combining several times since it was 28% but it is a white cob corn and the cob will not stay together. Looking at the material coming out the back of the combine I figure I am leaving 12-15 bushels per acre on the cob. Have adjusted concaves from 3-6 on gauge and cylinder speed from 250-510. Running at 5.5 concave and 500 cylinder is getting the best result. Should I wait for cold weather and hope the frozen cob will shell better or look at making earlage (never done before). I am finishing 100 calves this year but really have enough feed with silage and ryelage. Had 2 inches of rain last couple of days so have time to think. | |
