Dad likes to tell a story about the man he first started farming for. He was very particular and never went to town without cleaning up and putting on his suit, even if he were just running after parts. I mean shave, shower, and suit with a tie, every time.
He called the buying station to come pick up a sow. Driver comes in an old straight truck with wooden sides. They load the hog and the owner asks if he can have a moment with his sow before she leaves. Driver says he's in no hurry, go ahead. Gentleman farmer climbs over the side of the truck with an oak stick and proceeds to beat the holy crap out of the sow. Climbs out and says quietly, "Take her to town".
I think anybody who works with animals can identify with that sentiment!
FWIW the children's wing of the local library is named for that man's wife. This would've been in the early 60's.
