Our first child, a 20 month old son, seems to be slow to start talking. He has a few basic words , but doesn’t seem to have near the vocabulary or verbal communication in general that we’ve been told to expect.

He seems to be meeting all of his other milestones. He runs around daylight to dawn. His hearing seems to be good, he responds to commands/requests. He has great dexterity and is good at taking things apart. He’s very resourceful at getting into/onto all sorts of things he shouldn’t with help of whatever tools/props he can find.

Any experience with kids being slow to start talking? Activities or methods to help him along? Any experience with getting outside help from speech pathologist or speech therapists?

Appreciate any insight or wisdom you can share!

My nephew didn't say much of anything until he was about 2.5 years. Now he's 4 and talks non stop, can read basic words, and is picking up some basic math. Starting a little after a year, his mother started teaching him some sign language as it was obvious he could understand people talking to him, he just wouldn't respond. Picked up on the sign language instantly. Some people just learn and develop differently.
