Kingdom of Callaway - Fulton, Mo 65251 | I would do the opposite of what others are doing....
Around here there are a LOT of older guys that don't want to feed in the winter. So they do what you are thinking of doing and buy a bunch of calves in the spring, kick them out on grass, and gather them up this time of year and sell out. Half the years they make a little money, and a lot of years they barely break even or go backwards. Land is paid for, so they aren't too worried. What gets them often is the fences are falling apart faster than they can patch the holes with bed springs, and $10 auction bent up cattle panels.
I would feed yours a little longer over winter and sell them when the grass greens up to others, or pull off the cream as replacement heifers, or breed and sell as bred heifers, or feed on out if you are set up for that.
It seems like I make the most profit when I do the things other farmers don't want to do.
Good luck! You will figure it out. |
