Subject: Stocker Cattle/Calves

SD, US

So I would be new to the stocker side of cattle.

We (myself, father, and uncle) currently have our cow calf operations that we background and sell (typically) around mid to late January. I (myself) picked up some extra pasture a couple years ago and am considering the stocker route instead of the current cow calf.

Thought Logic:
 - Instead of cows, I would place stockers out on pasture in the spring - Then place them on stalks for as long as the season permits then liquidate.  (In South Dakota)
1. Not have to carry (my own) cattle through the winter
2. Cash flow - not waiting for a cow to pay herself off - (Downside: once the cow is "paid off" I would be missing out on that)
3.  ?

Currently throwing around the idea well ahead of either purchasing a few more cows or going the stocker route.

Advice/pointers, benefits/drawbacks, all input appreciated!

Thank you!
