Install a photo management software like Google Photos or the Adobe one, ask it to search your drive. Most of these packages offer to index and leave files in place or index and copy all the files to a storage structure. On apple's version it says something like "would you like Photos.app to manage photos for you?"

Once in a storage structure, copy that to an external drive or use one of the internal backup tools.

For all the pictures we take now, most folks don't seem to have a proper storage structure/plan, lots of friends have lost 15 years of family photos in an instant with a dead harddrive.
